Expo 2020 Dubai moves to 2021

Organisers are concerned about health risks.
The organizers of Expo 2020 Dubai have supported the proposition to postpone the event. The Expo might be moved to 2021.
According to the statement by the Director General for the Expo Reem al-Hashimy, participating countries have expressed concerns over the health hazards and requested the event’s timeline to be changed. The decision has been disclosed after the meeting of the organizers with the UAE authorities.
The Bureau International des Expositions has chosen Dubai as a place for the Expo back in 2013. The event is supposed to significantly boost the city’s tourism and real estate business. Around 11 million visitors were expected to come to the Expo. However, the coronavirus negates the positive effects of the event and also creates a health hazard.
The postponement still has to be approved by the representatives of the participating countries. However, as the number cases of the virus around the world is coming close to one million, they are unlikely to vote against.
The change might result in significant losses for Dubai. By December of 2020 the region would have paid over US$8 billion on the creation and maintenance of the Expo infrastructure. Now all the created facilities will remain unoccupied until the rescheduled event takes place.
The new dates of the event currently remain undisclosed.
